Memorial Day traffic will be worst in 10 years

The Georgia Department of Transportation has announced that it will suspend major construction and lane closures on interstates and major state system highways beginning at noon Friday, May 21 until 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 26.
Despite that proclamation, AAA is predicting the heaviest auto travel for the holiday weekend in ten years — a 5.3 percent increase compared to last year. The uptick is due in part to gas prices that remain relatively low compared to years past. If average gas prices across the nation hold steady over the next few days, they will be the cheapest fuel prices for motorists during Memorial Day weekend in at least five years.
A word of caution: road deaths in Georgia are up 26 percent compared to the same time last year, therefore GDOT is imploring caution on the roadways. GDOT also strongly advises that in the event of a crash or breakdown, never get out of the car on the freeway unless your life is in imminent danger. Stay seat-belted, turn on the emergency flashers and wait for help.
