CINCINNATI (AP) _ The parents of a young Black man fatally shot by police in a southwest Ohio Wal-Mart say they are encouraged after meeting with the nation’s new top law enforcement official.
WLWT-TV of Cincinnati reports (https://bit.ly/1AltTQz ) that Attorney General Loretta Lynch met with John Crawford III’s family Tuesday after a forum in Cincinnati on police reforms there in the aftermath of 2001 race riots.
John Crawford Jr. said they are hopeful Lynch will bring progress not only on their son’s case, but on community policing issues nationally.
“I personally would have liked to receive more information, but I appreciate her talking with us, I really do,” said Tressa Sherrod, Crawford’s mother.
“It was more of a feel of, I’ve got to show these people some type of sympathy; some type of understanding,” Crawford said.
The attorney general’s office didn’t immediately respond Wednesday to a request for comment.
The Justice Department had said last year it would review the case.
A special grand jury declined to indict police officers in the 2014 fatal shooting of the 22-year-old man in the Dayton suburb of Beavercreek Dayton. Police said they believed the air rifle he was holding was a real gun.
Crawford said he urged Lynch to watch the store surveillance video of the shooting. He said she told the family she would.
“I want her to feel it, because sometimes, things don’t change unless it hits home,” Crawford said. “You’ve got to be vested; you know, personally vested.”
His family filed a civil lawsuit against Beavercreek, its police and Wal-Mart.
