DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. – A small plane slammed onto Interstate 285 Friday morning in suburban Atlanta, killing all four people on board, law enforcement reported.
The plane crashed onto I-285 in DeKalb County just after it took off from nearby DeKalb-Peachtree Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement to the New York Daily News.
Remarkably, no motorists were injured. However, the interstate was closed in both directions, backing up traffic for miles for an undisclosed amount of time.
The crash site is estimated to be about 15 miles from downtown Atlanta.
According to witness testimony, the Piper PA-32 nearly hit a light pole as in descended, and immediately became a ball of fire when it hit the roadway.
“The impact was large, like a bomb being dropped,” said Don McGee, a witness, said according to NYDN.
“It’s a miracle, literally a miracle, that no other cars were hit,” DeKalb Fire Capt. Eric Jackson said.
No one was able to provide what could have caused the plane to go down at press time.
