Lifestyles Report…In my travels: It’s spring!

What is one of the sure signs that it’s spring? The re-opening of Rita’s Italian Ice and Dairy Queen. There was no doubt in my mind that my local Rita’s would re-open, it was the Dairy Queen on Verona Road that I was concerned about.
You might remember that last July, six people were injured when a landscaping truck slammed into the seasonal restaurant. The owners as well as a few employees and some of the men in the truck were injured. A gas line was also broken. It was a big disappointment for the area. It looked like the little DQ would never reopen.
Well there is good news to report. I recently drove by and there is a brand new Dairy Queen, complete with a drive-thru on Verona Road. I am so excited, not because I want to indulge in a lot of ice cream but because I hate to see the loss of a business. The owners seem to be very nice and hardworking, and I was praying that their insurance would bring the business back to life.  As soon as the weather warms up I will stop by for a banana split or a Blizzard.
I like checking out new restaurants or let’s say restaurants that I have not been to before. Last week I checked out Social at Bakery Square in what I will continue to call East Liberty. It is right across the street from where Reizenstein School used to be. Bakery Square has really blossomed, there are a lot of trendy stores and eating places for you to enjoy.
Please, I beg all of the old school “Sliberty” residents not to be chased away. Be just the deer that you cannot get rid of in your back yard; the mysterious “they” say the deer were there first.
Weren’t we in East Liberty first? Or maybe we were there last, either way let’s stick and stay, especially if you are a property owner in 15206, hold on as long as you can.
As far as Social, the food was good, but not great. The service was very good and so was the burger. I might go back if I’m in the area, but I would not make a special trip.
Speaking of burgers, McDonald’s has launched a sirloin burger that weighs in at one third of a pound and sells for $4.99. Well I have been your advance woman on this one, it is great. The sirloin burger will be available in three versions: bacon and cheese; lettuce and tomato; and a steakhouse version with mushrooms, grilled onions and white cheddar cheese. I had the one with the mushrooms. All I can say is it was some kind of good.
What I don’t get is why they bring these burgers out for a limited time, add it to the menu for good. I could never understand why they discontinued the Angus burger.
