Lifestyles Report…Beware of sites bearing gifts

I’ve always believed myself to be a pretty savvy shopper. I frequently leave the house in smashing outfits that average out to be $20 or less. I have even snagged a few great deals online.
Recently I found a pair of brand new suede boots in my size, 9.5 narrow for $8.99. They arrived at my home very soon after I purchased them and they were wonderful. They were from an online store that I will purchase from again. So I am rather embarrassed to tell you this story, but I hope it will help someone.
I was reading stories on an entertainment site and I saw a story about Oprah getting married. It looked like an interesting story. It spoke about Tina Turner getting married a few years ago and how good she looked to be over 70 and then it somehow segued into a skin care product ad. It mentioned you could “sample” some miracle skin care products for just the cost of shipping which was about $4.99 and I bit.
Somehow I knew I was making a big mistake and should have done my homework before I pulled out my credit card and not after. Minutes after I placed my order I checked out the reviews from other buyers. They all said that the samples were so small that they could not get a good idea if the product would work or not and then they mentioned that buying the sample would enroll you into a monthly commitment. That is when I screamed. I immediately picked up the phone and called my credit card company to block the transactions.
Unfortunately, I needed to wait a few days until they posted. I called the skin care company as well and received return purchase numbers. The merchandise had to be returned within a certain time. When they arrived, I returned the boxes and felt relieved.
Each month I look at my bills before I pay them and I noticed a large charge for something I did not buy. I recognized the name as this skin care product that I had returned. Fortunately their 800 number was listed right under the purchase and I called it. They told me they will credit my account, but these companies are slick, so if this ever happens to you please stay on them and keep notes on when you called and who you talked to.
Also if any product arrives at your house get a return mailing number and take it to the post office right away. Do not let it sit around your house and hope you won’t get charged, and please do not open the package.
Another important fact is please do not call your bank and try to claim that you do not know how this happened, that you did not order this and someone must have hacked into your account and bought skin care products. Be a big girl and deal with it; next time I’ll know better.
