Atlanta city officials, civil rights leaders and others will host a special event to honor the upcoming 50th anniversary of the iconic march in Selma, Ala., that lead to the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Mayor Kasim Reed, Rev. C.T. Vivian, city council members and others are scheduled to be at Atlanta City Hall to commemorate the groundbreaking march at noon Monday, March 2 in the City Hall atrium.
Organizers say the event in Atlanta will begin the city’s week-long photography exhibit featuring local leaders who were part of the civil rights movement. Next Sunday is the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, when a group led by now-Congressman John Lewis marched for voting rights was attacked by state and local law enforcement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
