V141124-PBS Robert ThompsonPunch Bowl Social (PBS), a gastro-diner and entertainment destination, is set to open its doors with a grand opening celebration  at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 1331 Broadway in downtown Detroit.
The Denver-based restaurant also operates successful eateries in Austin, Texas and Portland, Ore.
“We’re thrilled to come to Detroit,” said Founder and CEO, Robert Thompson. “We look forward to being part of this great initiative to revitalize a strong and culturally inspiring city.”
From menu samples to punch tastings to a live performance by Detroit’s own Kaliedo, the opening event is the perfect kick off for Punch Bowl Social and the Detroit community. Tickets, $10, can be purchasedOnline, via Facebook, or at the door upon availability.  ALL proceeds to benefit the Salvation Army of Metro Detroit.
punch-bowl“We support the good work done by The Salvation Army here in Detroit and across all of our Punch Bowl Social communities during the holiday season and year-round,” added Thompson. “They do so much for those in need by providing important services, such as food and shelter, emergency assistance, legal aid, counseling, character-building and recreational opportunities 365-days a year.”
THE CONCEPT
Set in a multi-level 24,000 square foot space, Punch Bowl Social offers something unique to downtown Detroit’s dining and nightlife scene. Incorporating a look Thompson describes as “dirty modern” with design elements of industrial, Victorian, modern and a Colorado mountain lodge feel, natural elements like brick, reclaimed wood, log tables and the warm lighting of Edison bulbs, the ambiance of each location is punctuated by the care its ownership takes in incorporating local elements.
Punch Bowl Social Detroit boasts four separate bars, divided dining and party spaces, and will have a Northern Michigan cabin-inspired space on its upper level.  “Think Moonrise Kingdom,” said Thompson, comparing this new element for Punch Bowl Social to the look of a Wes Anderson feature film.
The restaurant offers craft food, beverage and entertainment – known collectively as “eater-tainment.” While there’s no doubt visitors will notice its gaming options from bowling and private karaoke rooms to old school ‘80s arcade games, there is a distinct focus on the menu.
“The much anticipated grand opening of Punch Bowl Social brings a huge burst of excitement to downtown Detroit’s growing entertainment scene,” said Dan Mullen, Vice President of Leasing and Development, Bedrock Real Estate Services. “We’re thrilled to welcome this one-of-a kind destination downtown. With its mix of upscale comfort food, artisan punches, craft cocktails, and great games, Punch Bowl Social is sure to be one of the hottest dining and entertainment joints in the D!”
THE FARE
Punch Bowl Social aims to source its menu from local products. Chef Sergio Romero, a Denver resident, brings with him a wealth of experience and inspiration. Well-traveled and passionate about locally-sourced and fresh ingredients, he’s crafted items like Chicken and Waffles and Shrimp Couscous Salad with a culinary twist. A 2009 Iron Chef competitor and Denver Magazine “Rising Star,” Romero has collaborated with Thompson to develop Argyll GastroPub and LeGrand Bistro & Oyster Bar in Denver as well; both recipients of Best New Restaurant in Denver honors.
“Whether it’s the organic ketchup on the table, the greens in the salad, or the poultry in our dishes, the more we can source local, the better,” said Romero.” We are a growing company, and want to do what we can to help similar growing companies advance their efforts.”
Detroiters will find names like McClure’s Pickles, Zingerman’s Bakery, Peteet’s Famous Cheesecakes, Scotty O’Hotty Hot Sauce and Red Goose Spice Co. on the menu to name a few.
THE DRINKS
The beverage program, developed by Beverage Director Patrick Williams of Denver, echoes the same sentiments of local appreciation. Williams has spent more than a month leading up to the opening visiting craft breweries and establishing a menu that is meaningful to local visitors. Expect beer selections from breweries including Detroit’s own Atwater, Birmingham-based Griffin Claw, Grand Rapids’ Founders and more.
Craft cocktail fans will find drinks mixed with spirits from distilleries like Ferndale’s Valentine and Detroit’s Two James. Great Lakes Roasting Company coffees are freshly brewed. The Sunday Bloody Mary Bar features McClure’s Bloody Mary mix and a local DJ spinning vinyl. “Our goal is to capture the essence of Detroit by sourcing local products, and paying attention to the trends,” he said.
Through it all, Punch Bowl Social is sure to reach a wide variety of visitors – those who come to dine, to drink, or to enjoy all of the amenities eater-tainment has to offer. From business lunches to happy hour stops, private events and more, it’s poised to be a brand new Detroit destination that sets the bar even higher when metro Detroiters seek a new ideal of where to go and how to enjoy a night out.
