As part of an unprecedented mobilization effort to get out the vote, Chad Griffin, President of the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, will anchor an event in Atlanta today with State Senator Jason Carter, the Democratic nominee for Governor, and Atlanta City Councilman Alex Wan, to fire up LGBT Americans and their allies to get out and vote for pro-equality candidates, including Carter and U.S. Senate candidate Michelle Nunn.
Griffin will visit the Democratic Party of Georgia’s headquarters in Atlanta at 7:00 PM today to emphasize what’s at stake for LGBT Georgians and their allies in this crucial election. There he’ll join one of the ongoing phone banks reaching out to HRC members in Georgia.
HRC has nearly 40,000 members and supporters in Georgia. According to a poll conducted for HRC by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, LGBT and ally voters were critical to 2012 electoral successes.  The support of LGBT and ally voters could make the difference in close races this year in Georgia and elsewhere across the country, including in Georgia’s gubernatorial and U.S. Senate races.
“Both Michelle Nunn and Jason Carter stand for the rights of LGBT Georgians,” said David Stacy, HRC’s Government Affairs Director. “There are especially stark differences between Michelle Nunn and her opponent David Perdue. While Perdue opposes every measure of equality, Nunn’s strong positions on issues of great importance to LGBT Georgians make her the clear choice for the U.S. Senate.”
In Georgia, HRC has endorsed the following candidates who are committed to LGBT equality:
For United States Senate:
Michelle Nunn (D)
For United States House of Representatives:
Hank Johnson (D, GA-4)
John Lewis (D, GA-5)
For Georgia Governor:
Jason Carter (D)
