AURORA READING CLUB

On Oct. 11, at the University Club in Oakland, dozens celebrated 120 years of The Aurora Reading Club of Pittsburgh with a beautiful luncheon. The keynote speaker for the afternoon was Clayton J. Adams, the  great, great, great grandson of Solomon Northup (author of the autobiography “Twelve Years of Slave”).
To commemorate the occasion, artist Vanessa German created a one-of-a-kind sculpture that incorporated found objects donated by current Aurora members. The artwork was on display as well as the Legacy Scrapbook and Quilt that were created to commemorate previous anniversaries and document Aurora’s celebrated history.
Co-chairs of the anniversary committee were Margaret H. Burley and Shirley H. Golden, who are president and vice president of the club. The group was graced with several out of town members. Reverend Dr. Martha Orphe was in from Louisiana, and Thelma Lovette Morris and Greg Morris were in from Arizona.
Thelma Lovette spoke about her great, great aunt Rachel Lovett Jones, the founder of the Aurora Reading club, and recalled as a young girl that she would pick flowers for the meetings from her Aunt’s garden.
The Aurora Reading Club of Pittsburgh was founded in 1894 by six women who sought to “pursue a systematic course of study for the mutual improvement of the membership in literature, art, science and matters relating to the vital interest of the day.”
Jones founded the club with assistance from Frances Golden, Anna Posey, Virginia Woodson Proctor, Hannah Grinage Lovett and Cora V. Hill Washington, who became the charter members.
On this day each member of the Aurora Reading Club proudly wore their club colors––a rainbow in the form of a striking necklace.
