The importance of saying no to salt and knowing one’s health numbers, the “F.A.S.T.—Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty and Time to call 9-1-1”—signs for detecting a stroke, and a healthy dose of laughter, are just a few bits of information more than 500 attendees, many in red, took away from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Associations’ 3rd Annual Power of Laughter Health Workshop and Comedy Luncheon, held Sept. 20 at the Westin Convention Center Hotel, in downtown Pittsburgh.
The annual entertaining, yet informative event that promotes heart health and stroke awareness through laughter included the theme “Family, Intimacy & Me” and featured comedian, actress, author and motivational speaker Kim Coles as the emcee, along with the stylings of hip-hop violinist Humble G, Tha Fiddla.
“I have to tell you, seeing a sea of people of color in red, supporting the American Heart (Association) and American Stroke (Association) is exciting. We took a pledge to lower our salt intake; I’m not sure we’ll get to a place of no salt, but at least we can do better this year, than last. And I just think with Humble G and Kim Coles, and the combination of survivors’ (stories), I really believe people are fired up,” said this year’s honorary event chair Candi Castleberry-Singleton, chief Inclusion & Diversity officer at UPMC.
