LOS ANGELES (AP) — A civil rights lawsuit has been filed in federal court on behalf of a homeless woman seen in a video being pummeled by a California Highway Patrol officer alongside a Los Angeles freeway.
The suit was filed Thursday by Caree Harper, attorney for 51-year-old Marlene Pinnock, against the commissioner of the CHP, the unidentified officer in the July 1 video and other officers.
The lawsuit claims excessive force and seeks monetary damages to be determined at trial.
The CHP has said the woman was walking on Interstate 10, endangering herself and motorists, and the officer was trying to restrain her. The agency has, however, pledged a rapid investigation.
