Retirement is something most of us look forward to. Often we think about the day when we turn 65 and can move on to our next venture or just sit back and relax. For Brenda Tate, a 35-year veteran of the Pittsburgh Police force, sitting back and relaxing will not be an option. Soon after announcing her retirement from the police force she was elected by over 14,000 voters as a Pennsylvania Democratic Committee Person.
On June 1, at the Marriott City Center, Tate’s retirement was celebrated in a big way. There was the traditional dinner and fellowship, but also on the program were young dancers who paid a beautiful tribute to Tate through dance. Brenda Waters, of KDKA-TV, a delightful emcee, said that on that evening alone she learned new things about Tate who she affectionately referred to as the “fly cop” because of her stylish persona in and out of uniform. A slight roasting included comments from friends and family, and a presentation of a “tree of life” by Lisa Renfrew. The branches on the tree were adorned with charms that represented different aspects of Tate’s life.
As Tate transitions from her position as police officer for the city of Pittsburgh, she will begin the second chapter by continuing the work that she has been committed to for decades; supporting and encouraging minorities to run for political office and educating our young people about the importance of voting.
Friends who attended the party said Tate is truly loved, blessed and deserving, and that she has served the city and community well. They also said it is good to know that by attending this retirement celebration they helped to fund a one thousand dollar scholarship, in Tate’s name, through the NEED program.
