New dress code restrictions for customers at one of Bar Louie’s locations has brought the business under scrutiny by many, according to KMSP-TV, a Fox affiliate in Minneapolis.
The uptown Minneapolis location operates as a franchise, giving the owner the right to create and enforce any kind of dress code, Hilary Shahbabian, a spokeswoman for the popular food chain told the Chicago Defender.
A sign was posted on the door listing what is no longer considered acceptable attire. The things that are now banned are:
-flat bill hats
-sleeveless under shirts
-excessively baggy clothing
-large chains worn outside of shirt
-athletic apparel
-sports jerseys unless collared
-sleeveless under shirts
Imani Vincent told Fox News, “If you do not want African Americans to frequent your establishment, then maybe you should just say that and not just break down the dress code.”
Shahbabian said, “All of our locations reserve the right to enforce a dress code and while we maintain that everyone has the right to enforce it, it is never our intent to discriminate.”
There are 81 Bar Louie’s nationwide and 11 in Chicago, she said. About half of them are franchises, Shahbabian said, who added that she didn’t know of any Chicago locations creating a patron dress code. The manager at Chicago’s Hyde Park location declined to comment and other locations did not return messages.
Shahbabian said the company will not tell the Minneapolis location to change the dress code because it’s not a race issue.
“We have zero tolerance for discrimination, but the issue is not about racial discrimination, it’s about their right to enforce their dress code,” Shahbabian said.
Here’s what others had to say about the dress code on Twitter:
