Terri J. Vaughn, David Banner to be Honored at Atlanta Urban League Awards Gala

Actress Terri Vaughn and renowned radical rapper, actor and humanitarian David Banner will be honored along with others at 4th annual Urban League of Greater Atlanta “Spirit of the League” luncheon on Friday, June 27 at the Twelve Hotel at Atlantic Station.
Also receiving Urban League of Greater Atlanta awards will be Trista Selmar-Steed, a high achiever in the League ‘s Workforce Development Program, and Darold Palmore, a standout in the Second Chance Program. Lucia Sims also will be awarded for rising above challenges including job loss and eviction.
Vaughn shot to fame via the “The Steve Harvey Show” playing Cedric the Entertainer’s hilarious light-hearted and light-headed girlfriend in the 1990’s, and is now starring in Tyler Perry’s “Meet the Browns.” Her illustrious career in film and television is augmented by an active philanthropic life. The San Francisco native started the Take Wings Foundation to motivate, uplift and inspire girls 13 to 18 growing up in foster care and in public housing in the San Fran Bay Area — providing scholarships, mentoring and job training for young women, and encourages them to be positive, productive and successful.

She joins an illustrious list of honorees who have received this award including Tyler Perry, Soledad Obrien and Monique,” Urban League of Greater Atlanta CEO Nancy Flake Johnson said.
The Urban League’s Transformation Award is being bestowed upon Actor/Rapper David Banner, who just starred in “Ride Along” opposite comedian Kevin Hart and rapper/producer Ice Cube. He has achieved esteemed as a lyrical lion in the hip hop community, for his charitable work that came to national light during Hurricane Katrina, and for overcoming obstacles in his life including homelessness that propelled him to overcome them and to high levels of achievement in film and music.

The Atlanta Urban League’s annual “Spirit of the League “Awards Luncheon recognizes individuals who have overcome significant challenges, yet have achieved success while giving back to others and the community. By honoring these individuals, the goal is to inspire people who may be facing difficult times. The awards luncheon was created to encourage people to continue to be motivated to reach their highest human potential.
Terri Vaughn has an impressive portfolio of television and film roles and ongoing independent projects while also operating an Atlanta-based acting school.
