The food, the dance and the décor took hundreds to Bourbon Street on May 16, at the Carnegie Museum,  for the Ninth Annual Nellie Leadership Awards Gala. Three Rivers Youth (TRY) brought the energy of New Orleans right to the Carnegie in Oakland.
While NOLA has weathered many a storm and the ravages of a devastating hurricane, it has come back says TRY President and CEO Peggy Harris.
“In many ways, TRY is a stronger organization having recently engaged in a microburst of growth and expansion of services that will enlarge our footprint in Allegheny and Washington counties where we have a presence. Most notably, we have expanded the number of families that we are serving through crisis and non-crisis intervention; we have engaged in a partnership with the Pittsburgh Public Schools to provide critical pupil support services and we have launched new services in drug and alcohol prevention and intervention,” Harris wrote in the program.

On this festive evening, TRY celebrated their 2014 community Champions: B.A.S.H. (Black Association of South Hills for Women) was honored for volunteerism and Richard Riazzi, president and CEO for Duquesne Light, was recognized for corporate responsibility. The Heinz Endowments was honored for advocacy and the Pittsburgh Pirates hit a home run for community engagement. The Reverend Harold T. Lewis, Ph.D., D.D., D.C.L was recognized as a great humanitarian.
TRY couldn’t take the crowd to NOLA without music and dance. One of the highlights of the evening was the dancing on Bourbon Street competition. The contestants were the Urban Ballroom Dancers, and Les Pink and Green Strolling Dream Team.  Guests submitted their votes via their mobile phone and the Les Pink and Green danced away with the trophy.
Lynne Hayes-Freeland served as the emcee while Dr. Mark and Mrs. Roseanne Wholey were honorary co-chairs. The gala chair was Randall L. Crawford, president of EQT Midstream Commercial.
