Governor Quinn Attends Reverend Dr. Clay Evans’ 89th Birthday Celebration, Presents Proclamation to Reverend Evans

CHICAGO – Governor Pat Quinn attended Reverend Dr. Clay Evans’ 89th birthday party on Sunday, June 15 and presented Reverend Evans with a proclamation in recognition of his strong faith and contributions to the people of Illinois. The Governor provided the following statement:
“It is an honor to be here with Reverend Clay Evans to celebrate his commitment to bettering the lives of others.
“Throughout his illustrious career, he has written many books and helped to provide thousands with spiritual inspiration.
“I extend my best wishes to Reverend Evans as he continues to touch lives, inspiring people and empowering them to achieve to the very best of their abilities.”
Reverend Dr. Clay Evans was born on June 23, 1925 in Brownsville, Tennessee. He was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1950 and is the founding pastor of the Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago.
Dr. Evans has been responsible for launching the ministerial careers of 93 people, including Mother Consuella York, the first female to be ordained in the Baptist Denomination in Chicago. In addition, he has been a leader in the Civil Rights Movement since 1965 and held the position of Founding National Chairman of the Rainbow (PUSH) Coalition from 1971-1996.
Dr. Evans retired in December 2000, as the pastor of the Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, and has remained active with his church and community.
