City of Detroit officials announced plans today during a press conference at the Tech Town facility, to designate part of Detroit’s downtown as a hub for job creation and small business growth.
Mayor Mike Duggan introduced Henry Ford Health System Chief Nancy Schlichting as chair of a 17-person advisory committee that will develop a framework and plan toward the designation of a formal Innovation District in Greater Downtown. The 4.3 sq. mile designation in the greater downtown Detroit area is already home to; Henry Ford Health System, Detroit medical Center, Wayne State University and more than 30 companies that provide services to entrepreneurs and small businesses. Duggan and representatives of Midtown development Inc., said that harnessing the collective power of the District will accelerate job growth, commercialize new technologies and enhance the quality of life for Detroit’s people and businesses.
Duggan said Thursday that the district’s focus will “be to create an anchor to support neighborhood business incubators across the city,” adding that the process would be “drama free” and complement current and planned development projects.
The district also will lead to the establishment of entrepreneurial programs in Detroit neighborhoods.
More than half the jobs in Detroit are in the 4.3-square-mile Greater Downtown area.
