A former Las Vegas “Cirque Du Soleil” dancer was found guilty and sentenced in the murder and dismemberment of his fellow dancer girlfriend, Deborah Flores Narveaz.
Jason Omar Griffith, 35, was given a life sentence after being convicted of second-degree murder in the Clark County District Court. Before being led off, Griffith blew a kiss to his mother, Charlene Davis, as he was handcuffed to be taken to prison where he will live out the rest of his days.
Flores’ sister Celeste Flores Narvaez collapsed into her mother’s arms as the verdict was read. The family left the courthouse without speaking to the media, perhaps because they wanted Griffith to be convicted of first-degree murder.
Defense attorney Abel Yanez characterized Griffith’s reaction as “numb. Not upset, not happy,” reports the Las Vegas Review Journal.
Deborah Flores Narveaz died and disappeared following a heated argument at Griffith’s home on Dec. 12, 201o. Her disappearance in attracted national attention for almost a month before Griffith’s housemate, Louis Colombo, led police to her dismembered remains in tubs of concrete in a vacant house.
According to prosecutors, Griffith killed Narveaz then panicked and asked Colombo to dispose of the body.
The jury took about 14 hours before they came back with the verdict. Griffith’s defense attorneys said they will appeal, and Yanez added that his client was not the person the killing suggested he was. Prosecutor Marc DiGiacomo said he respected the verdict and understood it was difficult for jurors to decide guilt in domestic violence cases.
He also said he expected Griffith to receive the maximum 10 years to life in prison at sentencing July 23.
“You don’t get to dismember a body and not serve life in prison,” DiGiacomo said.
Griffith claimed self-defense during four days of intense cross-examination, telling jurors that he grabbed Flores from behind with his arms around her neck when he thought she was reaching for a purse that may have contained a gun. No weapon was ever found.
Prosecutor DiGiacomo countered Griffith’s self-defense claims, saying said he did nothing to resuscitate Flores.
Griffith performed as “Blu” as a performer in the Cirque du Soleil show “Love,” based on Beatles music at The Mirage resort. He told jurors that enjoyed a bevy of female friends and sexual conquests before he met Flores at a football halftime show in November 2009.
