LADIES LOVE MEAN JOE—Not so mean Joe Greene

More than 800 turned out on April 11 for a roast and tribute honoring former Pittsburgh Steelers Tight End Randy Grossman. The Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh Downtown was the venue for an evening that raises funds for the Mel Blount Youth Home now in operation for 26 years.
Blount says they were excited to put Grossman in the “hot seat” and were equally excited to have John Stallworth as master of ceremony. Grossman came to the Steelers in 1974 and was part of a rookie class that included Stallworth, Lynn Swann, Mike Webster, Jack Lambert and a host of great players.
Just like a good football game the evening began with the National Anthem but this year there was a twist it was performed by Randy’s daughter, Sarah Grossman.  After enjoying a great meal the fun began it was time to roast the man with the nickname “Rabbi” the only Jewish person on the team.
The roasters included sister-in-law Anna Szilasgyi who said at first she did not like him but now loves him as a brother, former Steeler Robin Cole who said he was hard pressed to find anything on Grossman so he got completely off track, former Steeler J.T. Thomas said he was selected to roast Grossman because he was known as a Christian and wouldn’t say anything bad about Randy. Rocky Bleier roasted Grossman via video while John Banazak and Donnie Shell talked about Randy’s love of ribs and that his hobby was knitting. They said most former athletes like to compete in their retirement but Grossman can be found at JoAnn’s in the yarn department.  Randy said he was humbled by the honor and this was a much better turnout than his bar mitzvah.
The mission of the Mel Blount Youth Home is to make a difference in the lives of young people for the past 25 years.
