When Shakira Magee (pictured), a deaf woman, was robbed at a Detroit gas station, no one offered to help her dial 911, according to Fox 2 News Detroit.

Magee was waiting at a gas station for a nearby store to open when the robbery took place. An unidentified man walked up to her attempting to strike up a conversation, but she did not know what he was saying. She alerted him to the fact that she was deaf; he smiled, then walked away.

After the stranger left, Magee resumed texting on her cell phone. Moments later, the man who had approached Magee pushed her, grabbed the phone she was using and sped off in a car. Magee sought help from the gas station. Scribbling a note asking for help, Magee, who was crying uncontrollably, approached a gas station attendant to see if he could offer any assistance. On the note, she asked that he contact 911.

The man just shrugged off Magee’s plea for help and went on about his business.

Magee then walked home and did not contact the authorities because she felt the police might deem the crime unimportant.

When Fox 2 News got wind of Magee’s story, the outlet approached the gas station’s manager, Souna Hadi, who said the clerk did not summon police because Magee left the premises too abruptly. Hadi said the incident was captured on surveillance video and will be released to police when they request it.

Magee insists that she did not get the help she desperately needed at the time of the incident. Signing her frustration, Magee contends, “Why didn’t someone step up and help me and just call the police? It’s as simple as dialing the phone.”

Meanwhile, Hadi said employees at the gas station will keep a notebook behind the counter in case a situation like Magee’s arises again. The manager also stated that Magee’s case is a definite lesson learned for all involved.
