Atlanta Jazz Festival Celebrates Jazz Appreciation Month In April
“We are diving in early this year and beginning our Atlanta Jazz Festival activities in April, “states Camille Russell Love, Director of the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. “In order to celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month we are partnering with wonderful organizations like Music In The Park, Atlanta Streets Alive, WonderRoot, Soul Food Cypher, The Sound Table, Center Stage and the Jazz Journalists Association to present and host music events all around Atlanta. We encourage jazz lovers to come out and join us.”

Music In The Park & Atlanta Jazz Festival join “Atlanta Streets Alive” on Sunday, April 20 from 2-8 pm
Music in the Park’s mission is to enlighten young performers and create vibrancy in communities through music and performing arts. Over the last three years, Music in the Park has inspired over a hundred Atlanta youth to seek out music instruction, practice year-round, and participate in the youth orchestra at the Music in the Park annual performance.
This year the “Atlanta Streets Alive” Parade will take place along Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard. The public is encouraged to join in and walk, bike, skateboard, or rollerblade. The parade will begin at the West End Mall at 5 pm.  Participants will proceed along the route enjoying musical performances hosted by Music In The Park along the way, before ending up at the Wrens Nest for a concert in the amphitheater from 6-8 pm. Atlanta Jazz Festival hosts “Straight No Chaser” at The Sound Table on Friday, April 25 at 7 pm
The Atlanta Jazz Festival will host a FREE screening of the documentary “Straight No Chaser” about Thelonius Monk at The Sound Table on April 25. There will be jazz-themed cocktails and specials available for purchase at the event. And there will be music following the film.
John H. Armwood from The Jazz Journalists Association will present the 2014 Jazz Hero Award during the evening.

Atlanta Jazz Festival is partnering with The Soul Cypher to present “Jazz At The Soul Food Cypher” at WonderRoot on Sunday, April 27 at 6 pm
Audiences can expect an urban, eclectic experience.  From 6-7:30 pm there will be a DJ on turntables exploring jazz concepts and the connections between jazz and other musical genres. The K&F Band will perform and collaborate with a vocalist from 7:30-8:30 pm. Their performance would explore the topic of jazz and how the improvisational qualities of jazz have influenced Hip Hop. This event is free and open to the public.
WonderRoot’s mission is to unite artists and community to inspire positive social change.  WonderRoot is located at 982 Memorial Drive SE, Atlanta, GA 30316.
Atlanta Jazz Festival endorses Laura Mvula concert at Loft in Center Stage on Mon, April 28 at 8 pm
Laura Mvulais a native of Birmingham, England who trained at the city’s Conservatoire. She is known for her unique orchestral pop sound — a mix of classic pop, jazz, and soul with creative twists. In 2012 RCA issued Mvula’s She EP, featuring the uplifting title song.  Her latest album is Sing to the Moon.
Center Stage is located at 1374 West Peachtree St NW, Atlanta, GA 30309. For the Laura Mvula concert doors will open at 7 pm and the concert will start at 8 pm. The Loft is a general admission, standing room venue.  All ages welcome.  Tickets are $20 and available online via Ticketalternative.com or, without ticket fees, in person at the Center Stage Box Office, M-F, 11 am-6 pm. Online sales end at 4 pm on day of show.
