Jesse Jackson, Sr. is planning to hold New York City’s new mayor Bill de Blasio to his campaign promise of a fairer city. It was reported that the civil rights icon met Thursday with de Blasio regarding the mayor’s attendance at his 17th Annual Rainbow PUSH Wall Street Project Economic Summit, to be held Feb. 11-14 in New York City. Jackson later told reporters that the mayor would, indeed, attend.

The theme of this year’s conference is “50 Years After the Civil Rights Act: The Unfinished Agenda for Economic Justice.” It comes on the heels of both de Blasio and President Barack Obama calling attention to the issue of economic inequality. Jackson says for no group are the disparities more apparent than Black Americans.

Events for the three-day summit run the gamut, but all center on expending economic opportunity for Blacks and diversity in corporate America.

One event will feature social media experts from major corporations teaching best practices for breaking through the clutter on platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Another, “Investment Opportunities In Africa,” takes an in-depth look at African agricultural investment opportunities for foreign investors. Yet another event will feature ESPN’s Chris Broussard, NBA Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas and the Carolina Panthers’ Brandon Williams to discuss the business of sports.
