DeKalb County Approves Excise Tax on Manufacturing Energy

An excise tax on the energy used in manufacturing has been approved by the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners.

The tax will generate funds to make up for money lost due to a new state law. This new law gradually eliminates sales taxes on the energy used by manufacturers. The tax will starts at 0.25 percent this year and will increase to 1 percent by 2016.

The funds generated are to be divided between the county and its 10 cities, not including Atlanta. Each city will profit between one-half and three-quarters of the money collected.
