GBI Makes Arrest in Murder Case of Valdosta State Freshman Jasmine Benjamin

Darien Meheux, an 18 year old from Lawrenceville has been arrested in connection with the death of Valdosta State University freshman Jasmine Benjamin, according to officials with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

Meheux was arrested Thursday evening in Ellaville, Ga., after turning himself in to the Sheriff’s office. He reportedly turned himself in once he became aware that there was a warrant for his arrest on murder charges for Benjamin’s death.

Officers with the GBI, Valdosta State Police Department, Valdosta Police Department and Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search for Meheux in Gwinnett County but then Meheux surfaced in Ellaville, according to a GBI press release issued Friday.

Benjamin was found dead on the Valdosta State campus in Georgia Hall on Nov. 17. The cause of death was asphyxiation. According to Benjamin’s family Meheux and Benjamin had previously dated.

A private investigator hired by the family, Robin Martinelli, said the arrest was not a surprise and that the family had suspected Meheux from the beginning.
