Supreme Court Denies Amazon, Overstock Petitions Over Online Sales Tax

(CNN) — The Supreme Court has rejected appeals from two big online retailers over the ability of states to tax their sales.
The justices, without comment on Monday, allowed a lower court ruling favoring New York state to stand. Overstock.com and Amazon.com had brought the appeals.
Courts around the country have issued mixed rulings on the issue. The United States has no national sales tax, and Congress has not yet acted on legislation aimed at allowing state governments to collect taxes from Internet-based companies.
The cases are Overstock.com Inc. v. New York Dept. of Taxation (120252) and Amazon.com LLC v. New York Department of Taxation (12-259).
