Georgia Tech Fraternity Member Suspended Over 'Rapebait' E-mail

(CNN) — A jarring e-mail sent from a Georgia Tech fraternity brother is attracting lots of attention online — and it’s not a good kind of attention. In fact, critics are calling the letter “disgusting,” “asinine,” “insane,” and all sorts of other colorful adjectives unfit to print here.

Here are a few quotes from the message, sent by a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. It is titled “Luring your rapebait,” and intends to advise other brothers on how to effectively interact with members of the opposite sex.

The writer tells his readers how to initiate conversation with women at parties: “IF THEY ARE HAMMERED AT ANY POINT BEFORE MIDNIGHT, JUST SKIP THE CHIT CHAT AND GO DANCE,” adding, “ALWAYS START WITH THE MAKING OUT!!!! NO RAPING.” At the end of the evening the writer advises brothers to “Expunge (send them out of your room and on their way out when you are finished).”

Finally, a coda to the above pieces of advice: “IF ANYTHING EVER FAILS, GO GET MORE ALCOHOL.”

While the content of the e-mail speaks for itself, online voices from all areas of interest expressed their shock. The Sports Bank called the e-mail a “sexual assault ‘how-to’ guide,” and the Daily Dot labeled it as blatantly “pro-rape.”

“Besides the blatant disregard for the women potentially involved here, and the fact that they’re labeled ‘rapebait,’ this reads like it was written by someone completely unfamiliar with women and sex, yet has narcissism and entitlement down pat,” writes the Daily Dot’s Audra Schroeder.

HLN has confirmed the e-mail is indeed legitimate. Both Georgia Tech and the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity national office have released statements, and they, like so many readers, are not happy about the incident and are conducting their own investigations:

“Georgia Tech is aware of this incident, and its Office of Student Integrity is currently engaged in an investigation to determine the facts,” reads a statement issued by a Georgia Tech communications representative. “Phi Kappa Tau’s national office, as well as Tech’s student-led Interfraternity Council, are also reviewing the matter to determine whether to take any independent action. The Institute does not condone this type of behavior and continues to provide resources and education designed to create a supportive campus environment for all students, even those who exercise extremely poor judgment.”

Phi Kappa Tau has also stated it is conducting an investigation, and have suspended from the fraternity both the writer of the e-mail and the entire Georgia Tech chapter pending further information.

A statement from the national chapter of the fraternity calls the email “extremely inappropriate” and “disturbing.”

“The Fraternity takes any activity seriously where its members or chapters are not in line with its commitment to learning, leading and serving. The written expression of this thinking by a member is disturbing to everyone associated with Alpha Rho chapter and the Fraternity.”
