Prominent Houston Bishop James Dixon, cousin of James Edwards, the 15-year-old charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Australian baseball player Christopher Lane,  has publicly voiced his disappointment in his cousin and apologized to Lane’s family, reports KHOU.com.

“A life is a life,” said Dixon. “It’s important for him to understand that someone’s life has been needlessly taken, a family’s total existence has been forever altered and you’re responsible.”

Dixon plans to travel to Duncan, Okla., to meet with his cousin and with local clergy.

“I’m hoping that my presence will serve to strengthen the unity between Whites, Blacks, Hispanics and others,” Dixon said.

Edwards and bi-racial teen Chancey Luna, 16, were charged with first-degree murder, while White teen Michael Jones, 17, was charged with accessory after the fact.

Bishop Dixon has also found himself on the other side of the law. KHOU reports that In 2010, he was charged with assault of a family member after being accused of physically abusing his wife, Tanisha Dixon, during an argument.
