Black Twitter, explained here, has set its collective sights on ABC News after the network’s website published a story attempting to scientifically explain the phenomenon of “twerking” that has dominated headlines since Miley Cyrus’s MTV Video Music Awards performance.
In what could only be described as an attempt to work every angle of the performance, ABC News posted the article this morning, titled “Twerking: A Scientific Explanation.” The hashtag #ABCReports began trending with satirical stories detailed in 140 characters or less.
“Stories” like “Spring, Summer, Fall, Cuffing? The New Season That Has Meteorologists Baffled” #ABCReports,” “I will slap some sense into you” Have African American mothers discovered the secret to raising IQs? More tonight on #ABCReports” and “I’m Sleep” the increasing trend of narcolepsy in the urban community. #ABCReports” have been retweeted hundreds of times.
The writer of the original ABC article consulted with exercise science professor from Auburn University, Michelle Olson, who offered this insight, “[T]he booty dancing move is a good “twerkout” for your butt and thighs. It also works the deep muscles of the hips and the core muscles of the lower back and abdominals.”
But beware. “[O]ver-twerking might throw out the lower back or make the knees creak, Olson cautioned.”
ABC has not yet responded to the hashtag.
