The Atlanta Falcons yet-to-be-constructed new downtown stadium could help the city land the World Cup, according to WXIA. An official in charge of planning Gold Cup matches told the station that the new stadium is a draw that could help Atlanta qualify as a host of the Gold Cup Finals match one day – or maybe even to host the World Cup in 2026.

Jeffery Webb, president of the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), said he was impressed with Atlanta’s performance as a host for semifinal soccer matches a couple weeks ago, and that endorsement could go a long way.

“In [Webb's] eyes it is a draw to help Atlanta qualify as host of the Gold Cup Finals match one day, or maybe even hosting the World Cup in 2026,” WXIA reported.
Webb said he’s familiar with plans for the new Falcons stadium and that he has met with the team and Atlanta’s mayor.

“Atlanta would be competing with stadiums in the US, such as stadiums in New York, the Dallas Cowboys stadium,” said Webb, “but from what I’ve seen once this stadium comes to fruition I’m sure it will be one of the newest stadiums and more modern stadiums.”
