‘Boylesque’ Group’s Gender-Swap Parody of ‘Blurred Lines’ Stirs Controversy (and Laughter)

Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” song and video has made more than a few people – including Youtube, which banned the unedited version – cringe this summer. While largely hailed as the song of the summer, the video, featuring T.I. and Pharrell Williams, and a number of half- and fully-naked women, has stirred up its fair share of controversy. Enter Mod Carousel, a Seattle “boylesque” troupe that has put a gender bending twist on the clip.

The video features Caela Bailey, Sydni Devereux and Dalisha Phillips on vocals. Carousel’s Trojan Original, Paris Original and the Luminous Pariah play the roles of the female models we saw in the original music video.

The group, apparently helmed by three men – Pariah along with Trojan and Paris Original – said of their video:

“It’s our opinion that most attempts to show female objectification in the media by swapping the genders serve more to ridicule the male body than to highlight the extent to which women get objectified and does everyone a disservice.

“We made this video specifically to show a spectrum of sexuality as well as present both women and men in a positive light, one where objectifying men is more than alright and where women can be strong and sexy without negative repercussions.”

So far, at least one of the more than 400,000 viewers of the clip seems to have gotten the intended message.

“It’s funny, because I’m a guy and was cringing at a lot of points during this video,” said YouTube poster Oil Mercer. “It’s a great idea but man I couldn’t look at the laptop for half the video. Very cleverly done, now I see why a lot of ladies didn’t watch/like the original.”
Mod Carousel has been hailed by critics “tongue-in-cheek,” “hilarious” and “a breath of fresh air,” according to press files posted on the group’s website.

So, it’s OK to laugh.

Warning: Video is unedited and features coarse images and language some viewers may find offensive.
