The Georgia Department of Labor reports that the state’s unemployment rate rose slightly to 8.3 percent from 8.2 percent in April.
Since May, more Georgia residents have been actively looking for employment while many are working already. The number of people entering the work force rose to 4,819,407 in May, up 6,435 since April. The number of jobs in Georgia went up 0.4 percent to 4,043,200.
“Despite the slight increase in the unemployment rate, Georgia employers continued to create jobs for the fourth consecutive month, giving us the largest number of jobs we’ve had since December 2008,” said Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. “And, it’s very encouraging that the number of construction jobs has increased for the third consecutive month.”
The number of Georgia layoffs rose 9.9 percent from 42,644 in April to 46,882 in May. This spike is a largely the result of temporary manufacturing layoffs, food services, healthcare, and social assistance.
