Happy National Donut Day (NDD)! The yummy fried delight is being honored today all across the country by popular national chains, so hightail it to one of the many retailers who are doling out free donuts on this day that has been celebrated since the 1930s.

National Donut Day got its roots in 1938, when the Salvation Army conjured up a day in which the women, “Donut Lassies,” who served the yummy torus-shaped piece of dough to World War I soldiers would be recognized for their efforts. This significant occasion established the donut as a long-standing symbol of the services the Salvation Army continues to provide.

The sweet event occurs on the first Friday in June of every year. NDD pays homage to the immensely popular sweet deep-fried treat, but there are three other donut holidays as well.  International Jelly-Filled Doughnut Day is widely recognized as June 8 (occasionally as June 9).  National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day is celebrated on September 14, and Buy a Doughnut Day occurs on October 30.

Check out the retailers below who are taking part in the donut festivities of the day:

Krispy Kreme:  One of hottest chains in the country will give you a donut of any variety without having to spend a dime.

Dunkin’ Donuts:  Known for their killer coffee, the popular donut chain will give you a “freebie” but have to buy a beverage.

Tim Hortons: This retailer is making you work a smidge for one of their donuts by sending you to their Facebook page to print out a coupon; you also have to buy something from the eaterie.

Entenmann’s:  The baked good company has launched a Donut Day sweepstakes, where you can win prizes on the site.

LaMar’s Donuts: Deemed as having the donuts that are “fit for kings,” the chain is giving away free donuts Friday with no purchase necessary, and a portion of this week’s sales are being donated to the Salvation Army.

Winn Dixie: The popular supermarket chain will give its customers a free large donut hole.

Shipley Do-Nut:  The 77-year-old chain with a legion of fans that are devoted to the less greasy and feathery light product will receive a glazeddo-nut.
