ROOSTERTAIL CELEBRATES 55 YEARS WITH GLAM RETRO ART EXHIBIT

SWANKY MID-CENTURY STYLE, ONE-NIGHT ART EVENT BY DETROIT’S CHERISHED RETRO ARTIST, SLAW

As the cultural attitudes of the 1950s and 1960s seem so prevalent again today — through television, movies, fashion and art – it only seems fitting that the Roostertail, Detroit’s premier entertainment complex, would celebrate its 55th anniversary, reflecting the elegance of that classy era. On Thursday, April 18, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., the Roostertail presents “Swingin’ with Slaw,” a full immersion experience, featuring a dazzling art exhibit created by Detroit’s celebrated retro artist, SLAW.

“My grandfather built the Roostertail for my grandmother in 1958,” says Michael Schoenith, whose family still owns and operates the stunning waterfront facility.  “It was such a stylishly sophisticated era, so what better way to celebrate the Roostertail’s birthday, than with a lavish mid-century style party?”

The event is free, open to the public, and will showcase art, music, vintage décor, furniture cocktails and costumes from the grand 1950s and 1960s. Guests are asked to immerse themselves by dressing in mid-century style clothing, reflecting the characters in many of SLAW’s paintings.

The 24-piece Rhythm Society Orchestra will perform hits from the 1950s and 1960s while guests dance, mingle and indulge in themed hors d’oeuvres such as deviled eggs or Jell-o cups, while sipping chilled bubbly or specialty “Slawtinis”. And taking this celebration to an even higher level, Fathead, the industry leader of officially licensed sports and entertainment graphics, will create and display amazing Standees of life-size SLAW characters.

Fathead will also provide a Step and Repeat featuring all the sponsors, in addition to awarding the winner of the best dressed contest with their very own SLAW character interpretation created by Fathead.

SLAW, who was born and raised in Hamtramck and graduated from College for Creative Studies, will have originals, prints and merchandise available for purchase. His work often features Detroit celebrities and hotspots decorated in mid-century panache. At the event, he will unveil a 5ft by 10ft commissioned oil painting commemorating the Roostertail’s 55th anniversary. This will be SLAW’s 7th commissioned piece for the Roostertail.

Doing its part in paying this event forward, the Roostertail will auction Fathead Standees and donate all proceeds to Detroit Passport to the Arts.
