Despite witness reports police say led them to two teenage boys, a lawyer for one of the suspects accused of shooting and killing a baby in his stroller says his client is “absolutely” not guilty.

Public defender Kevin Gough told The Associated Press that his client, 17-year-old De’Marquise Elkins, who along with another teenage suspect is facing a murder charge, “is absolutely, 1,000 percent not guilty.”

Gough made the comments as he prepared for Elkins’ first court appearance Monday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, a 14-year-old boy who also faces a murder charge appeared in court Monday morning in the death of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago in Brunswick.

The baby was killed Thursday morning as his mother, Sherry West, walked him on a Brunswick street. West said two boys confronted her on the street and demanded money. She said that when she told them she didn’t have any, one of the boys started shooting. Police say she was shot in the leg, and her baby was shot in the face and died.
