At a celebration of metro Atlanta’s biggest and brightest athletes, the Eighth Annual Atlanta Sports Awards on Tuesday evening at the Fox Theater, Chipper Jones was honored.

“This type of event is something that brings the focus on all the great things that we have with respect to sports on the field, off the field” Dan Corso, the executive director of the Atlanta Sports Council, told WGCL.

For the past eight years, some of Atlanta’s most accomplished high school, college and pro athletes have been honored on one night. On Tuesday, the evening belonged to Chipper Jones.

The former Atlanta Brave was recognized by being awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award.

“It is very humbling and nice to know that 19 years in the big leagues has not gone unnoticed,” Jones said. “It is nice to just hang out with some of my contemporaries, guys on the Atlanta Hawks and Falcons and seeing the next generation of young players come up.”

Jones, the 1999 National League MVP and likely future Hall of Famer, retired from Major League Baseball last October after 19 seasons, all of them with the Atlanta Braves.

“I got four boys at home so I am going to spend an incredible amount of time with them,” said Jones. “All of them are under the age of 15. I am going to try to shave a couple strokes off my golf game and do a little hunting on the side.”
