Ga. Department of Transportation Planning to Expand I-85 HOT Lane

Metro Atlanta drivers are filled with mixed reactions as the Georgia Department of Transportation announces they want to make an expansion of Interstate 85’s HOT lane.

The I-85 Express Lanes run for 16 miles from Chamblee Tucker Rd to Old Peachtree Rd in Gwinnett and DeKalb counties.

The lanes are in use 24 hours a day, seven days a week with the corridor lane being a High Occupancy Toll (HOT), requiring vehicles to have Peach Pass registration to utilize it.

The GDOT wants to continue the lanes ten miles north towards Hamilton Mill Rd while adding another lane to the interstate.

“I haven’t seen any help with any of the construction,” driver Dwayne Anderson told WSB-TV. “The roads are still packed. You put ten lanes on the road, the lanes will be full.”

The 10-mile expansion would start in 2014, costing approximately $93 million and three years to complete.
Before ensuing construction, the GDOT wants feedback from the public in two hearings that they will host next month.
“I think it’d be great,” said driver Edgar Walker. “I think the added lane will make a big difference.”
