Clark Atlanta Lady Panthers Struggle on the Road

A team-high 28-points by Clark Atlanta University’s point guard Conisha Hicks was not enough as the Lady Panthers stumbled on the road against Paine College Thursday.

The Lady Panthers could not find their offensive rhythm in the game and found themselves down 34-24 at the half. Midway into the second period, the Lady Lions extended their lead to the largest of the game at 17 points before Clark Atlanta orchestrated a 13-4 run to cut the deficit to nine points with seven minutes remaining led by Hicks who poured in 10 points during the stretch. But that was as close as CAU would get to the lead as Paine pushed their lead back to double-digits to finish the game.

Offensively, Hicks carried the Lady Panthers while shooting 12-of-22 from the floor and 66 percent from behind the arc along with the help of Erika Sumpter who added her seventh double-double this season with 12 points and 14 rebounds. For the Lady Lions, Ashley Watts poured in a game-high 32 points.

It was CAU who edged Paine (12-13, SIAC 10-5) by two points in their first meeting earlier this season and prior to this game held a slight advantage with the No. 2 ranking in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division ahead of the Lady Lions at No. 3.

Next, Clark Atlanta (13-11, SIAC 9-5) will complete its two-game road swing against the East Division leader, Benedict College, Saturday, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m., before returning home to host Albany State Monday, Feb. 18th, at 6 p.m., in Epps Gymnasium for Senior Night.
