Clark Atlanta’s Joye Wins Newcomer of the Week

Junior transfer Jarrell Joye was named this week’s Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball newcomer of the week after helping the Panthers to two consecutive conference wins this week.

Joye, a 6-2 guard, led the Panthers with 18 points in a 72-70 win over Fort Valley followed by a 13-point performance against Claflin. He tops Clark Atlanta in scoring while averaging 13.4 points per game.

Benedict’s Marcus Goode is the SIAC Men’s Basketball Player of
the Week, while Paine’s Ashley Watts and Miles’ Courtney English are the
SIAC Co-Players of the Week for the 12th installment of the 2012-2013
basketball season, the conference announced today.

Clark Atlanta’s Jarrell Joye is the SIAC Men’s Newcomer of the Week,
and Co-Newcomers of the Week were award to Paine’s Kiara Johnson and
Tuskegee’s Marie McAbee.

SIAC Basketball Players of the Week
Men’s Player of the Week
• Marcus Goode, Senior, Benedict College
Position: Center Height: 6-10 Hometown: Chapin, SC

Goode continued his second half surge with another 26 point performance
in the Tigers win over Fort Valley over the weekend. In the game Goode,
also grabbed as season high 17 rebounds. For the week, Goode averaged
20 points, 12.5 rebounds, and three blocks, while leading the Tigers to
a 2-0 record.

Women’s Player of the Week

• Ashley Watts, Paine
Position: Guard Height: 5-6 Hometown: Augusta, GA

Watts, the SIAC’s leading scorer, averaged 32.5 points, six assists,
and four steals last week to lead Paine to a 1-1 record in games against
Fort Valley State and Albany State. Watts scored 30 of her 35 points in
the second half to lead the Lady Lions to a 89-84 overtime win over
Albany State.

• Courtney English
Position: Forward Height: 5-10 Hometown: Atmore, AL

English earned her 16th and 17th double-double of the season in games
against Lane and Kentucky State this week. Against the Thorobrettes,
English recorded 22 points and 16 rebounds.

Men’s Newcomer of the Week

• Jerrell Joye, Clark Atlanta
The junior from Harlem, NY helped the Panthers to two consecutive
conference wins this week and led all scorers with 18 points in the win
over Fort Valley State.

Women’s Co-Newcomer of the Week
• Kiara Johnson, Paine
Position: Freshman Height: 6-2 Hometown: Jacksonville, FL
The freshman sensation had a dynamic presence in the post, scoring 15
points, and grabbing 15 rebounds to help Paine defeat Albany State in
overtime.

• Marie McAbee, Tuskegee
Position: Forward Height: 5-8 Hometown: Talladega, AL
McAbee scored 10 points and added four rebounds, and three assists in
the Lady Tigers win over Stillman over the weekend.

Men
• Mario Jordan, Paine
Averaged 19.5 points while leading the Lions to victories over Fort
Valley and Albany State last week.
• Ulysses Thomas III, Kentucky State
Thomas averaged 15.5 points and 3.5 rebounds while leading the Breds’
to a 1-1 record last week.
• Dwayne Bingham, Clark Atlanta
Bingham led the Panthers to consecutive conference wins this week over
Claflin and Fort Valley, while topping the Panthers with a 17-point
effort in a loss against Morehouse.
• Calvin (C.J) Thomas, III, Tuskegee
The senior scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds in the Golden
Tigers 86-72 victory over Stillman College.
• Shawn Allen, Morehouse
Allen scored a season-high 31 points in a win over Albany State,
leading the Maroon Tigers to a 12th straight win in conference play.
• Shoquan Stevens, Lane
Stevens led the Dragons in scoring in both games played last week with
15 and 14 as the Dragons defeated Miles and LeMoyne-Owen.
• Ty Lollar, Miles
Lollar scored 20 points in the Golden Bears big win over Kentucky State
last week.
Jerel Stephenson, Paine
Stephenson averaged 17 points and 6.5 rebounds in games against Fort
Valley and Albany State..
• Richard Dixon, Tuskegee
Dixon scored 18 points and eight rebounds in Tuskegee’s win over
Stillman

Women
• Sharnita Lloyd, Kentucky State
The senior averaged 15 points and 5.5 rebounds in wins against Miles
and LeMoyne-Owen
• LaQuisha Lewis, Clark Atlanta
Lewis led the Lady Panthers with her second double-double on the season
with 14 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Claflin.
• Nnenne Eze, Tuskegee
The Stone Mountain, Georgia native was one of four Tuskegee players to
score in double-figures in the team’s 78-58 win over Stillman. She also
led the team in rebounds.
• Brittany Jackson, Benedict
Had double-double of 15 points, 12 rebounds in a win over Fort Valley
State.
• Crystal Rayford, Lane
Crystal averaged a double-double in the two victories for the Lady
Dragons with an average of 15 points and 12 rebounds.
• London Richardson, Benedict
Had a team high 15 points in the Lady Tigers win over Albany State.
