With a valiant effort, the Clark Atlanta University Panthers stunned Fort Valley State University with a 72-70 win at Epps Gymnasium Monday and snapped an eight-game losing streak for a much needed conference win.

Jerrel Joye, the team’s leading scorer, poured in 11 of his team-high 18 points in the first period as the Panthers orchestrated a 23 to 7 run to take a slight advantage into the half, 38-36. Despite the Wildcats’ 14-point lead, it was an evenly matched period as both teams shot 44 percent from the field and 80 percent from the charity stripe.

The Panthers (3-15, SIAC 2-8) extended their lead to as many as five points in the second period that included five ties and eight lead changes. Clutch free shooting down the stretch was the difference maker for the Panthers as they snapped an eight-game losing streak.

James Arnold added 15 points and four assists while Kevin James chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds along with Glyndelle Poole’s 13-point performance off the bench.

Next, Clark Atlanta will travel to Claflin University Thursday, Feb. 7, for a 7:30 p.m., match-up.
