With the price of chicken wings surging to a record high and rumors swirling that there may be a shortage of them for Superbowl Sunday, two men in the Atlanta metro area took some unusual action. Police reports say Dewayne Patterson, of Lithonia, and Renaldo Jackson, of Stone Mountain, stole $65,000 worth of frozen chickens from Nordic Cold Storage in Doraville where the two were employed.

Patterson is 35 and Jackson is 26. Fox 5 reports that the pair were arrested thanks to videotape obtained by the Gwinnett County Police Department. The theft reportedly happened Jan. 12.

Police reports show that the men rented a truck and backed it to the location’s back bay doors. Video shows the men using a forklift to load 10 pallets of Tyson frozen chicken wings.

Both Patterson and Jackson were charged with felony theft. According to Gwinnett County Jail records, the men have since been release on $2,950 bond.

The wings have yet to be found.

News of the heist comes on the heels of reports that chicken wings have reached their highest price ever.

According to The National Chicken Council, wholesale chicken wing prices are up 14 percent from last year to $2.11 a pound across the nation. That’s the highest price ever recorded by the US Department of Agriculture.

The price enhancement has been attributed to a record increase in the price of corn, which is the primary ingredient in chicken feed.

Consumption is actually down one percent – 12.3 million – from 2011 due to a shortage in the number of chicken wings produced, ABC news reports.

The Chicken Council estimates that Americans will still eat 1.23 billion chicken wings on Super Bowl Sunday.
