Thieves Steal $300K in Copper Wire from Atlanta Set of ‘Anchorman 2’

Atlanta police are investigating the theft of four computers and $300,000 worth of copper taken late last month from a northwest Atlanta warehouse being used to film the sequel to the 2004 hit comedy “Anchorman.”

The burglary was one of several break-ins in recent weeks in the Defoors Ferry Road area, which is where Paramount Productions has rented out space to film the movie. There was also a break-in Monday morning less than half a mile from the warehouse where “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues” is being filmed.

“It’s a shame this happened because Atlanta is really trying to get big in the film industry,” Davis Nort, the building’s owner, told WSB-TV.

The owner of the building said he believes the thieves entered through a rear garage door.

Copper theft has become a serious issue in Atlanta and around the country. In August thieves stole copper wiring from Georgia 400 traffic cameras, knocking them out for days. Reports from the Department of Energy estimate that copper theft is responsible for $1 billion worth of damage every year.

Two issues are driving the theft are the poor economy and rising price of copper. Thieves sell copper to scrap yards and metal recyclers for big money.

A sign offering a reward of $5,000 was posted at the building.
