After Alabama’s convincing 42-14 victory over Notre Dame in Monday night’s BCS Championship Game, there is little doubt who college football’s top dog is – the Crimson Tide are ranked no. 1 in the final AP Top 25 poll.
The Georgia Bulldogs, the team that gave the Tide one of their toughest games of the year in a 38-28 thriller at the Georgia Dome for the SEC title, finished the season ranked no. 5.
The Dawgs ended the season tied with fellow SEC contender Texas A&M for the fifth spot. The Southeastern Conference had five teams in the top 10, the most of any conference, with South Carolina and Florida rounding out the group, ranked eighth and ninth respectively.
Also in the top 10 were Oregon, which finished ranked no. 2 after a dominating victory over Kansas State, Ohio State, Stanford and Florida State. Notre Dame was ranked fourth. Ohio State was the nation’s only undefeated team, but were banned from postseason play because of the NCAA’s ruling that players received improper benefits and their coach failed to report them to the NCAA.
All told, seven SEC teams were ranked in the top 25. LSU finished their season ranked no. 14, after losing a heartbreaker to Clemson in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl at the Georgia Dome, and Vanderbilt edged its way into the rankings after an impressive showing against North Carolina State in the Music City Bowl.
