Two free throws with 4.4 seconds remaining gave LeMoyne Owen a slim 60-59 conference win over Clark Atlanta University Thursday at Epps Gymnasium.

Trailing 35-29 at the half, the Panthers went on an 11-3 run and took their first lead since early in the game on a three-point basket by Daniel Lindsey at the 11:05 mark. With five minutes remaining, CAU mustered its largest lead of five points when Jerrel Joye’s long range 3-ptr found the bottom of the net. After a series of plays and the game knotted at 56, LeMoyne Owen’s Edwin Shorter hit a jumper that propelled the Magicians to a 58-56 lead. Joye, who previously hit 1-of-2 free throws with 58 seconds remaining, gave the Panthers a 59-58 advantage with two of his seven second-half points. A CAU foul put the Magicians on the line with 4.4 seconds left and Bryon Ray hit both free throws to seal the win for LeMoyne Owen.

Joye lead all scorers with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field while James Arnold added 12. Dwayne Bingham also chipped in 11 points and four rebounds off the bench for the Panthers. Shorter led the Magicians with 12 points and four rebounds. As a team, LeMoyne Owen outrebounded CAU 36 to 24.

The Panthers (1-8, SIAC 0-1) will look for their first conference win as they host Lane College Saturday, Jan. 5, at 3 p.m. in Epps Gymnasium.
