Yellow Jackets Open New McCamish Pavilion Against Tennessee
Georgia Tech women's basketball program recently announced it will open the season with three homes games at the state-of-the-art McCamish Pavilion. The Yellow Jackets will tip-off the season against perennial power Tennessee at the brand new McCamish Pavilion on Sun., November 11. Following the opener against the Lady Vols, the Yellow Jackets will host Kennesaw State (Nov. 13) and Marquette (Nov. 18). Last season, the Yellow Jackets defeated the KSU's Owls, 94-51, and topped the Golden Eagles,74-63, in Milwaukee.
GT's tough schedule consists of playing against six teams that made the 2012 NCAA Tournament, including a pair of Elite Eight squads, as well as opponents from the Big East, Big Ten, SEC and Pac-12. The full schedule with dates for ACC opponents and times for all games will be released in late August.
Valedictorian for this year's LeMoyne-Owen graduating class is Deyquan Nesbit (SIAC photo). Nesbit, the top student on campus with a 3.93 GPA, received a Bachelor of
Arts in Business Administration with an emphasis on Finance. He was also named the team's MVP this season.
Hampton University's Chidi Okezie (MEAC photo) won a gold medal at the IAAF World Junior Championships. It was held as part of the U.S. junior 4x400-meter relay team. The team won in a time of 3:03.99, and included Okezie, Quincy Downing, Aldrich Bailey, and Arman Hall. The team also turned in the top time in the preliminary heats, winning the second heat in 3:06.26.
Grambling States' new women's head basketball coach Patricia Bibbs returns to her alma mater where she'll have three starters back from a team that finished the past season with a 15-15 record. Bibbs is the only coach in the country to amass at least 500 wins at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and returns to a program that she built with eight conference titles in her previous 13 years there.
