The Georgia State University Marching Band was invited Tuesday to march in President Barack Obama’s second Inaugural Parade on Jan. 21, 2013.

The GSU band was formed just three years ago when the college got a football team for the first time. The 140 member band is the only Georgia group on the initial list of parade participants released Tuesday by the Presidential Inaugural Committee. The band is directed by Chester Phillips, a native of Newnan who is in his third year of leading GSU’s band. Phillips also directs the basketball pep band.

The Georgia State band is scheduled to leave Atlanta for Washington on Jan. 18, march in the parade on Jan. 21 and return home the following day.

More than 2,800 groups submitted requests to march in the parade before the November application deadline. The first invitations went out Tuesday to 24 organizations. Additional participants will be announced later.
