Hurricane Sandy forced the cancellation of hundreds of American Red Cross blood drives in 13 states and the District of Columbia.

Although the blood supply has been replenished, the storm is an important reminder of why it’s the blood on the shelves that helps save lives before, during and after a disaster. The Atlanta Braves are teaming up with the Red Cross to host a blood drive on Monday, November 19 and Tuesday, November 20, 2012 from 1:00-7:00 pm at the Metropolitan Atlanta Red Cross Chapter located at 1955 Monroe Drive, Atlanta, Ga. 30324. The drive is co-sponsored by Rock 100.5 and 680 The Fan.

All presenting donors will receive:

* A licensed Braves insulated pilsner
* A Braves tomahawk
* A chance to win game tickets
* A chance to win autographed baseball memorabilia

“The Atlanta Braves and the American Red Cross share the same commitment of helping to make a difference in the community,” said John Schuerholz, president, Atlanta Braves. “We are honored to partner with them in the wake of Superstorm Sandy to remind people of the importance of donating blood.”

The Red Cross Southern Blood Services Region provides lifesaving blood to patients in more than 120 hospitals. Approximately 1,200 people need to give blood or platelets each week day to meet hospital demands.

“Whether it’s a natural disaster or the upcoming holiday season, it’s important to remember the need for blood is constant and patients count on the generosity of volunteer donors,” said Randy Edwards, chief executive officer, American Red Cross Southern Blood Services Region. “The Red Cross encourages blood donations year-round and we thank the Atlanta Braves, Rock 100.5 and 680 The Fan for helping us reinforce that message.”

Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Platelets can be given every seven days, up to 24 times a year. Most healthy people who are 17 years of age (or 16 with parental consent) and weigh at least 110 pounds are eligible to donate blood to the Red Cross. Donors who are 18 years and younger must also meet specific height and weight requirements.
