ATLANTA VOTERS UNITED AND CAU LAUNCH POWERFUL VOTING EFFORT

Passion and civic pride set the tone on the CAU campus Tuesday as hundreds of students came together in red and black to participate in the process of becoming registered voters. Armed with the theme, “The Movement Must Continue,” the university dedicated its opening convocation to the civil rights struggle and voter registration.

Following the lead of campus leaders, the students were first inspired by an igniting message from civil rights icon, Dr. Joseph Lowery who reminded the gathering that the right to vote for African Americans literally came into being as a result of the blood, sweat and tears of past generations. In view of changes to voter ID requirements and other issues, ATLANTA VOTERS UNITED partnered with CAU to coordinate the drive on campus and to answer all questions related to the voting process. ATLANTA VOTERS UNITED also conducted on-campus special training sessions for leaders of Greek letter organizations. The students were fully engaged and lined up at multiple stations to wait their turn and secure as much information which would enable them to be a part of eliminating voter suppression.

At least one student was moved to tears as she embraced the fact that she now has the opportunity to participate in the selection of a president and make her single voice heard.

Ready to carry the torch and inspire the community, other students shared that they were going to call their parents, some who admittedly are not registered, and compel them to follow their positive example.

Over the month of September ATLANTA VOTERS UNITED, a relatively new non-partisan/non-profit organization founded by Richard Byrd, has registered hundreds of students in the AU Center. With a motto of “We Make Voting Easy,” the group has vowed to leave no stone un-turned.

A planned march following the fall convocation and voter registration drive was cancelled due to very heavy rain. However, as far as momentum and an ongoing aggressive campaign, CAU has just begun! A number of consequent activities are planned—all the way to Election Day! Stay tuned to Cascade Patch!
