UNCF (United Negro College Fund), the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization, announced that Gov. Nathan Deal will host and serve as the keynote speaker for UNCF’s inaugural Georgia Governor’s Luncheon on Thursday, June 21, from 11:45 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the downtown Hyatt Regency Atlanta.
Proceeds from the luncheon will support UNCF’s member institutions in Georgia (Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Paine College and Spelman College) and UNCF’s mission of ensuring that every child gets a good education from preschool through college. Each year, more than 11,000 Georgia students attend UNCF member institutions and receive UNCF scholarships.
“At a time when a college education is more important than ever, both to individuals and to the economy, UNCF works to ensure that our future leaders have the opportunity to get the college degrees they need and our nation needs them to have,” said UNCF President and CEO Michael L. Lomax, Ph.D, who will speak at the luncheon.
“We welcome Gov. Deal’s support for the importance of college education in today’s economy, and for giving students the education they need before college to succeed in college,” Lomax said.
Since 2003, the governor’s luncheons have raised more than $4.2 million in various UNCF markets to support students who attend UNCF’s 38 member historically Black colleges and universities. This year’s event is expected to raise $150,000.
AT&T is the national sponsor of the Georgia Governor’s Luncheon, and Southwest Airlines is a major sponsor. Other sponsors include Cox Enterprises and Georgia Power Company.
“We are excited about the launch of our Governor’s Luncheons in Georgia and the opportunity to share the wonderful work that UNCF does,” said Maurice E. Jenkins Jr. of Atlanta. He is executive vice president of development for UNCF. “The support of our sponsors and community will help more Georgia students go to and through college, changing students’ lives and increasing Georgia’s prosperity.”
