John Lewis Featured In PBS's 'Finding Your Roots'

Congressman John LewisCongressman John Lewis will trace and discover his family’s ancestry on the season premiere of “Finding Your Roots With Henry Louis Gates Jr.” The segment will  air Sunday, March 25, at 9 p.m. on local PBS television stations.

A former Atlanta City Council member, Lewis has served as Georgia 5th District Congressman since 1987. He is widely known and respected for his commitment to the dignity of all human beings and the protection of their fundamental rights and freedom.

His role in the Civil Rights Movement began as a student when he conducted sit-ins and became a Freedom Rider. Lewis understands that the Civil Rights Movement today, especially among young people, is grounded in technology that has galvanized and motivated a new generation of freedom fighters.

That is why Lewis is holding a Facebook chat with Morehouse College students during the PBS viewing. He will view the program with a small group of volunteers at the Park Tavern in midtown Atlanta while students participate online.

“Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr.” will also feature Newark Mayor Cory Booker in the season premiere segment with Lewis.
