The Dream Art Contest Art Exhibit

Friday, February 17-Wednesday, February 29. Library hours.

Opening event for this exhibit will be Friday, February 17 at 6:30 p.m.

Presented by Atlanta Public Schools and Karz Productions, the Auburn Avenue Research Library will host a special exhibit featuring artwork from participants that qualified for the semi-final round of The Dream Art Contest.  The competition focused on generating an appreciation for the relevance of history and to demonstrate the vital importance of the arts in education and in daily life.

Sankofa Exhibit and Lecture

Thursday, February 21. 2:00 p.m.

The Sankofa bird looks backward with the egg of the future in her beak, constantly checking as she moves into the future. It symbolizes one taking from the past what is good and bringing it into the present in order to make positive progress through the benevolent use of knowledge. Mrs. Teresa Kemp, Historian and Director of the UGRR Quilt Code Traveling Museum, will share her exhibit and historical information featuring Black History art-facts an overview of the struggles, contributions and history of Blacks to America.

Our Stories: African American History for Children — An Afternoon with Calvin Ramsey

Saturday, February 25. 3:00 p.m.

In recognition of Black History Month the Roswell Branch will host renowned author and playwright Calvin Alexander Ramsey, who will discuss his thoughtful works of illustrated children’s literature highlighting the African American experience. This discussion will include Mr. Ramsey’s book Ruth and the Green Book, the powerful story of a young girl’s journey from Chicago through the segregated South to her Grandma’s house in Alabama; and Belle, The Last Mule at Gee’s Bend: A Civil Rights Story, the moving tale of a mule that played a key role in the Civil Rights Movement – and a youn
g boy who sees history anew. Registration is required.
